Warren Silver Offers Perspective on Municipal Authority to Regulate Cannabis Businesses

BUPD’s Warren Silver joined with notable lawyers to present a continuing legal education (CLE) program on issues related to the cannabis business.  The State of Illinois’ recent legalization of cannabis for recreational use resulted in numerous questions related to the practice of law.  The program titled Cannabis and Hemp Law and Business in Illinois: The Nuts and Bolts (IL), produced by Pincus Professional Education, covered a range of topics including federal law enforcement, intellectual property, emerging trends in litigation and implications for employers in and out of the industry.

For the CLE session, Warren spoke on municipal authority to regulate cannabis businesses under the new regulatory scheme established by Illinois’ new law legalizing adult recreational cannabis use and commerce.  His comments highlighted the need to pay particular attention to zoning regulations in Chicago and elsewhere in Illinois.  He also addressed how Chicago’s ordinance is seeking to promote social equity through distribution of cannabis businesses throughout the City.  Warren’s remarks reflected his deep experience serving the City of Chicago including as a member of Mayor Richard M. Daley’s staff, where he worked to develop policy as well as political, legislative and media strategy in transportation, infrastructure and environmental matters.

The program is available on audio recording and is approved for 7.0 CLE general credits in Illinois and California.  The CLE course covers the impact and regulations related to Chicago’s new legalization of marijuana, how intersects with Medical Cannabis regulations and how both individuals and businesses are affected.  Attendees offered high praise for Warren’s presentation commenting “I found Mr. Silver’s presentation to be very informative and materials were excellent!”
